Was Algebra I a challenge for your child in Middle School? Are they moving into Upper School where they either must retake some of the Algebra content again or are being expected to move onto Algebra II or Geometry when they may not feel confident in their foundational Algebra I skills? This course will work to take the content that students learn in a traditional Algebra I class and review it in a way that unlocks the meaning behind the Algebraic processes through tying traditional algorithms to rich real-world problems. Using a combination of traditional algebra content and word problems in a small class setting,  students will explore concepts such as solving linear equations, graphing linear equations, solving linear systems, simplifying exponential expressions, writing linear equations from data, multiplying polynomials, factoring polynomials, solving quadratic equations suing multiple methods, and graphing quadratic equations. Students are encouraged to use this course to feel more confident as they enter their high school math class and to demystify any skills that they may have found challenging in their past algebra experiences.

For: Rising 10th, 11th and 12th graders
Pre-Requisite: Taken at least one studio art course

The Portfolio Development Course is a rigorous inquiry into the art-making process, from brainstorming and the importance of utilizing a sketchbook to exploring a variety of media in order to investigate concepts and themes pertinent to each student-artist. The two-week class is student-led. Mrs. Rohrer will introduce a variety of techniques, materials, and artists both contemporary and from art history to encourage and inspire students to make two-dimensional pieces that can be used for their college application portfolios/supplements or for AP or advanced art classes. Possible projects include oil, watercolor, gouache, and acrylic painting, printmaking, installation art, mixed media, encaustic, and fashion design.
