Developing a Visual Language

Studio Art
Our studio art classes are spacious and light-filled with views out onto the school grounds. RPCS studio art rooms house the materials and equipment capable of producing a wide range of works, from traditional drawing, painting, and printmaking, to mixed media assemblages, and draped fashion designs on our quarter-form mannequins.

Ceramics
Ceramics is introduced in Lower School and develops different degrees of structure, guidance, and skill throughout the students' progression through Middle School. In the Upper School ceramics program, students build clay objects by hand or at one of 6 potter’s wheels.

Photography
In photography, a student can work traditionally at one of 10 enlargers in the darkroom or with the latest Adobe Creative Suite software on her personal laptop or one of the many Macs in the digital media lab.
In the Classroom

Lower School
Studio art is a required class taught in kindergarten through 4th grade. The curriculum unfolds at a developmentally appropriate pace, introducing students to different mediums, forms of expression, and techniques as they progress through Lower School. Projects start in the younger grades with an examination of line, shape, pattern, and exploration of the color wheel. Students learn about using different drawing mediums such as pencil, marker, pastels and then explore painting, printmaking, and mixed media. Lower School students are also introduced to sculpting with modeling and earthen clay, gesture drawing, self-portraits, fibers, collage, and construction.
In addition to learning the elements and principles of art, there is a strong emphasis on art history; examining artists and art movements that weave visual art from ancient times to present day.

Middle School
In Middle School art, students have fun while engaging in serious, meaningful artistic work. The studio is a dynamic space for exploration, observation, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving. Students learn to think and act like artists, with growing opportunities each year to build skills and make more independent artistic choices.
From the start of fiifth grade, where students develop foundational techniques and explore core artistic ideas, to the end of eighth grade, where students create a unique body of work reflective of her personal voice, our artists grow as both individuals and creators. The curriculum emphasizes student choice, contemporary art practices, and a wide range of diverse artist exemplars and role models. This approach empowers every student to find confidence in her creativity and celebrate her unique perspective during her pivotal Middle School years.

Upper School
Our Upper School visual arts program offers more than 15 classes for students to either try for the first time or expand on a already developed skillset. Students in the Upper School can further their expertise by earning the Arts Certificate of Distinction at graduation.
