Upper School Math Overview

In the Upper School, our goal is to develop students’ mathematical literacy by fostering critical thinking, collaboration and creative problem-solving. In grades 9-11, our math program is problem-centered and integrates skills from a broad range of topics. We use Phillips Exeter Academy’s Math 2 through Math 3-4 primary texts to study the topics of Geometry, Algebra, Trigonometry, and Precalculus. Supplemental materials created by RPCS faculty are also incorporated. Students in 12th grade can select from a variety of elective courses, including Advanced Placement Calculus and Statistics.
 
Through both traditional, direct instruction and student-centered discussions and presentations, the Upper School curriculum provides rigorous and hands-on learning that emphasizes a conceptual understanding of mathematics. Our integrated math program encourages students to take risks, notice and test patterns, form conjectures, brainstorm strategies, analyze their responses for reasonableness, and support their opinions and solutions. This approach develops strong problem-solving skills that prepare students for advanced studies and real-world applications.
