3rd Grade Social Studies
In third grade, the social studies curriculum begins with an exploration of activism, focusing on individuals who have made meaningful contributions to their communities and the world. Students then transition into a year-long study of Maryland, using Maryland: An American Adventure 1450–1790 to explore the state's rich history, geography, and natural resources. A highlight of the year is the Impactful Marylander Research Project, where each student selects a notable Marylander who has made a positive difference in the world. They research, write, and memorize a speech about their chosen individual, which is recorded using a green screen in STEAM class, featuring meaningful images in the background and paired with oil pastel portraits created in art class. The year concludes with an interactive, non-Western cultural unit on Japan, offering students a broader global perspective and an appreciation for its rich traditions.
