2nd Grade Social Studies

In second grade, students explore how people, places, and cultures—past and present—shape the world around them. The year includes an in-depth study of Ancient Egypt, an exploration of Baltimore’s history and community, and a foundational unit on economics. Through rich, interdisciplinary projects that connect with STEM, Art, and Science, students build an understanding of Egyptian culture while comparing and contrasting ancient civilizations with life today. They learn to identify and interpret map features such as symbols, legends, keys, and the compass rose, and to recognize how people adapt to and change their environment. The study of economics introduces key concepts such as needs and wants, consumers and producers, and how people earn, spend, and save money—helping students make meaningful connections between the past and their own world.
