1st Grade Social Studies
In first grade, students expand their understanding of community and citizenship by exploring their own identities and the world immediately around them. They begin to recognize how their unique qualities, perspectives, and actions contribute to the greater community. Through hands-on experiences—such as creating a bird sanctuary, studying the migration and habits of native birds, mapping their surroundings, and exploring the greater Roland Park community—students learn how individuals exist within, are influenced by, and can positively impact collective groups. The curriculum emphasizes both self-awareness and social responsibility, helping students understand the power and obligation each person holds as a citizen. Studies center on community roles, goods and services, sustainability, environmental stewardship, and meaningful service opportunities.
