Science 1

During science class in first grade, the girls focus on natural life, the relationship between animals, the seasons, and people, patterns in space, and are introduced to the behavior of sound and light.

The year begins with an understanding of the different parts of a plant, and in what conditions certain plants grow in. The girls always enjoy using our garden and Backwoods as real life examples of seeing many different kinds of plants. We also discuss the survival instincts of animals, and in what environments certain animals can thrive in. The girls take all they have learned about animals and plants and then determine how seasonal patterns and people can affect their way of life and survival.

There is a multidisciplinary project in first grade that is focused on ornithography and combines in-depth social studies lessons with science research, public speaking, and writing.
