Middle School World Languages Overview

The Middle School world languages program encompasses three languages: Chinese, French, and Spanish. All language programs emphasize communication by developing speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. The curriculum in all three languages utilizes age-appropriate textbooks and resources, and technology enhances instruction through authentic images, videos, sounds, and texts. In addition to learning level 1 grammar and vocabulary, language courses engage students with thematic units that reflect the diversity of world cultures in the various countries where each language is spoken.

An exploratory Latin class is available as an elective for eighth graders who wish to pursue Latin in Upper School and is taken in addition to the student's modern language.

In fifth grade, students continue with the French or Spanish class they began in third grade. The curriculum focuses on vocabulary acquisition and communication structures. Most will begin the level 1 secondary school curriculum in that language in sixth grade. There is also the option to study Chinese from sixth through eighth grades. Upon successful completion of the Middle School, students should place into a level 2 class in Upper School. 

Students entering seventh or eighth grade are placed in world language according to their experience, ability and interest. New eighth graders entering RPCS without prior modern language instruction may opt to audit an eighth grade class in Chinese, French, or Spanish to prepare to take the level 1 class in Upper School.
