Middle School Performing Arts Overview

The Middle School performing arts program includes a four-year curriculum of formal classes in dance, music and theater.
 
In 5th grade, students participate in semester-long dance and music courses that build ensemble performance skills. In 6th grade, they continue with semester-long dance and music, with theater added to the curriculum. By 7th grade, students engage in a year-long Performing Arts Workshop (PAW), a co-taught course focused on contemporary musical theatre techniques in voice, acting, and dance.

In 8th grade, students select two electives from four offerings: Acting for the Camera, Eighth Grade Dance, Eighth Grade Singers, and Visual Art. They may also choose to join Middle School Chorus or Middle School Dance Company, both open to all students without audition.

Each semester concludes with a concert showcasing the breadth of the curriculum. In addition, the Middle School stages a full musical theatre production annually, open to all students by audition.
The music curriculum develops skills in music literacy, sight-reading, listening and analyzing, expression, and effective vocal technique. Students also enjoy hands-on experiences with drumming, hand bells, ukuleles and other instruments.
 
In dance classes, students learn a variety of dance techniques and explore performance qualities, improvisation, composition, and stage presence throughout the semester.  All classes learn choreography which is presented in either the Middle School Winter or Spring Concert.

Theatre courses invite students to explore the art of visual storytelling through experiential learning, analysis, collaboration, and creative expression. Students develop a strong foundation in theatrical vocabulary while engaging in activities that build confidence, empathy, and ensemble awareness. 

Each year, students in middle school can choose to audition for the Winter Musical. This experience brings together students in grades 5–8 to collaborate on a full-scale production where practical singing, acting, and dancing skills come together in a polished, high-level performance. Students in grades 6–8 may audition for featured and company roles, while 5th graders join the Troupe, participating in select numbers with a lighter rehearsal schedule. In addition to onstage opportunities, students can join the Tech Crew to gain hands-on experience with lighting, sound, costumes, and stage management. This annual production is a highlight of the year, fostering creativity, teamwork, and the joy of bringing a story to life.
