Big Ideas in 8th grade include:

  • Studying and applying transformational geometry: rigid, congruence, dilations, and similarity
  • Expanding and applying their understanding of proportional reasoning and relationships
  • Expressing linear relationships using equations, tables, and graphs, and making connections across these representations. 
  • Identifying characteristics of functions by looking at a table, graph, equation, or word problem.
  • Identifying characteristics of linear and nonlinear relationships by looking at a graph, table, equation, or word problem
  • Expanding their ability to work with linear equations in one and two variables.

  • Exploring,graphing, and solving absolute value equations
  • Explorating, graphing, and solving inequalities
  • Extending the definition of exponents to include all integers, and in the process codifying the properties of exponents. 
  • Writing and solving systems of equations

  • Exploring and graphing nonlinear functions such as quadratic and piecewise functions

The mathematical work for Grade 8 is broken into 9 units. Students in the advanced sections have a hybrid curriculum based on the Illustrative Math 8th grade curriculum and the Phillips Exeter Academy Math 1 Algebra/Geometry curriculum.
