Math 6

Big ideas in grade 6 include: 

  • Finding area of polygons not composed of rectangles and surface area of polyhedra; 
  • Developing an understanding of and interpreting ratios, equivalent ratios, unit rates, and speed; 
  • Connecting and comparing percentages to fractions, decimals, and ratios using tape diagrams and double number lines; 
  • Finding percentages of numbers, solving real-world percentage problems and using benchmark percentages; 
  • Building a thorough understanding of fractions, decimals, and percents and the relationships among these representations of rational numbers; 
  • Developing and applying algorithms for fraction operations and reviewing methods for finding products and quotients of decimals; 
  • Representing algebraic relationships with tape diagrams and hangar models using these to reason about solving simple equations; 
  • Identifying and writing mathematical expressions; and
  • Using the distributive property to find equivalent expressions.
