Math 6
Big ideas in grade 6 include:
- Finding area of polygons not composed of rectangles and surface area of polyhedra;
- Developing an understanding of and interpreting ratios, equivalent ratios, unit rates, and speed;
- Connecting and comparing percentages to fractions, decimals, and ratios using tape diagrams and double number lines;
- Finding percentages of numbers, solving real-world percentage problems and using benchmark percentages;
- Building a thorough understanding of fractions, decimals, and percents and the relationships among these representations of rational numbers;
- Developing and applying algorithms for fraction operations and reviewing methods for finding products and quotients of decimals;
- Representing algebraic relationships with tape diagrams and hangar models using these to reason about solving simple equations;
- Identifying and writing mathematical expressions; and
- Using the distributive property to find equivalent expressions.
