3rd Grade Math
In third grade, the Math in Focus curriculum continues to build on strengthening number sense, recognizing patterns and relationships, and developing flexible thinking in problem-solving. Students build confidence with operations as they fluently add and subtract within 10,000 using a variety of strategies and algorithms. A major emphasis is placed on understanding the properties of multiplication and the relationship between multiplication and division, while students also begin to see fractions as numbers and explore their place on the number line. Lessons extend to real-world applications, such as calculating elapsed time, interpreting and creating scaled picture graphs, bar graphs, and line plots, and relating area to both multiplication and addition. Through these concepts, students gain the skills and confidence needed for more complex mathematical thinking in the years ahead.
