1st Grade Math

In first grade, students explore number sense and deepen their understanding of mathematical relationships through hands-on manipulative work and problem-solving as part of the Math in Focus curriculum. They build confidence and flexibility in thinking as they work with addition and subtraction equations within 100, develop fact fluency with numbers to 20, and begin to understand two-digit place value. Lessons emphasize a variety of strategies for solving problems and communicating mathematical reasoning. Students are also introduced to foundational concepts in fractions, measurement, geometry, and telling time—laying the groundwork for more complex mathematical thinking in later grades.
