K-4th Grades Dance

The Lower School dance program emphasizes technique, repertory, and creative expression through a progression of age-appropriate movement experiences. Beginning in kindergarten, students learn the structure of a dance class and build foundational locomotor skills, body awareness, and confidence through creative movement and simple choreography.

In first and second grades, students deepen their technical understanding through focused study in ballet, modern, jazz, and contemporary dance. They explore rhythm, spatial awareness, and expressive storytelling while learning to connect classical and modern techniques in performance pieces.

By third and fourth grades, dancers refine their technique, stamina, and performance quality through increasingly complex choreography. They study regional and cultural styles, including dances from Italy, Spain, and Latin America, such as Flamenco, while continuing to develop artistry, collaboration, and poise. Across all grades, students learn to approach dance as both a disciplined practice and a joyful form of self-expression.
