4th Grade Literacy

4th Grade Literacy

Fourth grade is a year of tremendous growth as students begin to develop the academic, organizational, and social skills that prepare them for the transition to Middle School. These curious and increasingly independent learners are ready to take ownership of their learning, ask deeper questions, and explore topics with greater critical thinking. In literacy, students strengthen communication skills through novel studies focused on literary elements, plot, and character analysis. They expand their writing through personal narratives, persuasive pieces, poetry, and evidence-based responses, supported by instruction in vocabulary, spelling, and more advanced grammar. Students build empathy and an understanding of differences from reading novels such as Sharon Draper’s Out of My Mind. These stories, as well as a partnership with St. Elizabeth School in Baltimore, encourage our students to deepen their understanding of themselves and others, making fourth grade a powerful, engaging, and compassion-driven year of learning.
