2nd Grade Literacy
In second grade, students continue to grow as confident, independent readers and writers. Building on foundational literacy skills, they focus on developing fluency, comprehension, and reading across multiple disciplines. Through small-group instruction and leveled “just-right” texts, students practice making connections, predicting, inferring, and drawing meaning from what they read. They also explore a variety of genres and begin novel studies, identifying key story elements such as character, setting, and cause-and-effect relationships. In Writer’s Workshop, students learn to plan, draft, revise, and edit their work, strengthening both creativity and clarity. The Handwriting Without Tears program introduces cursive writing, while ongoing work with poetry, nonfiction paragraphs, creative pieces, and written responses helps students express ideas thoughtfully and effectively.
