If you wouldn't shout it in the streets, don't write it
on the web.
What you say on the Internet travels and takes on a life
of its own. If you would not feel comfortable saying something
that everyone you knew could find out about, then don't
say it on the Internet.
2. Take 5.
We all write email and IM's in a hurry! Read your mail or
your IM before you press the send button. If you're angry
or upset, or you've said something that may come back to
harm you, take 5 minutes to consider the consequences.
3. Teach your
skills to younger siblings and your parents.
The Internet is complicated and changes quickly. You are
at the cutting edge.
4. Don't agree
to meet anyone you've met online in the real world.
5. Be wary of those who want too much information.
Don't give out your name, address or any other revealing
information including sports teams, school clubs, summer
camp, etc.
6. Know who everyone
is on your buddy list.
Buddy lists have a way of getting passed around and shared.
The wrong people could easily creep in.
7. Look at email
addresses and web URLs carefully.
8. Don't forward any emails or IMs that were meant for your
eyes only. Respect
other people's privacy.
9. Don't
reply to spam mail.

Be careful downloading files and applications.
11. Google yourself
to make
sure that nothing turns up about you that is false or world
embarass you.
12. Block
annoying IM's
Know how to block someone who's bothering
you on IM.
13. Keep
Passwords private.
Don't give them out - not even to
your friends. Use passwords that aren't obvious.
14. Don't
post profiles on IM services or on websites.
15. Report anything fishy
to your parents or a trusted adult.
16. Do not steal music, movies
or other intellectual property. Besides
being illegal, these sites are notorious for having pop
up ads and spreading spyware and viruses.
17. Help your parents outfit
your computer to keep it safe. Make sure
your computer has antivirus software and a personal firewall
installed. Keep the tools updated.
18. Save suspicious or threatening
emails or IMs. Having documentation about
a problem can help you if the problem persists.
19. Password protect your
personal pages. If you keep an website or
online page of photos or personal information make sure
it's only available to people you know and trust.
20. Never give out personal
information (such as name, age, address,
phone number, school, town, password, schedule) or fill
out questionnaires or any forms online.
21. Never meet in person with
anyone you have met online without your parents' presence.
22. Never respond to or send
e-mails to new people you meet or people you don't know.
23. Never send, without a parents' permission, a picture
over the Internet or via regular mail to anyone you've met
on the Internet.
