MD SPCA : The Maryland SPCA is an independent, non-profit organization funded by donations. Our mission is to prevent the cruel and neglectful treatment of animals through fostering the humane relationship between animals and people. We strive to accomplish our mission through education, humane advocacy, active direct care, pet population control, and screened adoptions. The Foundation Fighting Blindness: - Student volunteers are needed to assist grant and proposal writing, media relations, volunteer administration, and to participate in other valuable work experiences.   Be a part of the search for a cure for retinits pigmentosa! Contact: 10-785-1414.

Support of Children/Youth
St. David’s Day School : Volunteers needed to help in their Summer Fun Program for children ages 3-6. Contact: 410-366-2133 for more information.
StandUp for Kids:   Committed to the rescue of all youth.   Contact: 410-783-5401 or standupforkids@email.com.
St. John’s Inner-City Summer Camps:   Volunteers are needed to help at the camps for disadvantaged children from the inner city.   Camp is held at St. John’s Church in Glyndon, Maryland.   You can volunteer by the day, the week or the summer.   Help with sports, art projects, etc.   Contact: St. John’s Church at:   410-833-5300.
Kid’s Place: Outreach Program for children.   Contact: 410-823-0122.
JHU Summer Tutorial Project : Tutor 5 yr. olds one-one-one in preparation for kindergarten.   Two sessions for ½ a day. Contact: 410-516-7673.
Ronald McDonald House: Volunteers ages 10 – 15 require adult supervision and students age 16 and older can volunteer without supervision.   Contact: 410-528-1010, extension 106.  Location: 635 W. Lexington Ave., Baltimore, MD 21201.
My Sister’s Circle*:  My Sister’s Circle is a comprehensive relationship-based program developed to mentor academically promising fifth grade students from disadvantaged neighborhoods during their challenging transition to middle school and high school. Operation Smile International: A medical program sponsoring missions throughout the world to provide medical services to needy children. Contact: 410-821-9414.

Holocaust Research : Additional information forthcoming.
The Great Blacks in Wax Museum: America’s first Black History Wax Museum.   Student volunteers serve as tour guides, office helpers, and assist with general maintenance.   Open all summer.   Contact: 410-563-6414 for volunteer opportunities.
Central America Solidarity Committee: Help with press and organizing work to bring to Salvadoran and Mexican union labor leaders; develop and teach educational programs on international solidarity. 1443 Gorsuch Ave., Baltimore, MD 21218. Contact 410-467-9388.

Support of Disaster Victims (man-made, weather related)
American Red Cross: Blood Services volunteers are needed to register and greet donors, prepare empty sterile containers, escort donors, and serve refreshments.   Work at Red Cross Headquarters or community sites.   Orientation is needed.   You will need to call ahead of time to get an application before the orientation dates.   Contact:   1-800-272-0094; ext.1 or www.redcrossdonor.org or contact your local Red Cross.

Support of Disease Research/Cures
JHU Oncology Center : Prefers 17 & 18 yr. olds.   Student volunteers work with patients and their families at Hackerman-Patz House, home for adult cancer patients and their families at JHU.   Duties include answering front door and telephones.   Some interaction with patients and families as they enter and leave the residence.   Hours:   Mon.-Fri.   5:00-9:00pm. Sat. and Sun - 4 hr. Shifts 9:00am to 9:00pm.   Must commit to a minimum of 40 hrs.   Contact: Michael Hibler 410-614-1212.
CHAIN : Challenging Addiction in our Neighborhoods: Volunteers needed to help with local tobacco control projects.  For more information contact: American Cancer Society at 410-933-5146.

Support of the Elderly
Jewish Family Services: Serve lunch and dinner to older residents of area high-rise buildings; accompany clients to local supermarkets or obtain a grocery list by phone and shop for them; join other volunteers to make festive centerpieces to support the JFS Kosher Food Pantry; help Russian-speaking clients improve English language skills; offer companionship to frail elderly older adults in their homes to help reduce their isolation; drive and escort clients to medical appointments; help JFS staff with filing.   Contact: JFS Volunteer Services at: 410-542-6300, ext. 244, 296.

Adopt-A-Plot at Sherwood Gardens in Guilford: Volunteers needed to enhance the beauty and improve the environment.   Contact: 410-243-5830.
Greater Homewood Community Corporation, Inc.: Needs volunteers to help clean-up the Jones Falls. Contact:   410-261-3500 or www.greaterhomewood.org.
Ladew Topiary Gardens: Located in Monkton, MD Contact: 410-557-9570 extension 13.
National Aquarium in Baltimore: Volunteers serve as Visitor Service Reps; ticket takers; gift shop helpers; door guards; tour guides.   Contact: 410-576-3800.
Chesapeake Heritage Conservancy: “Martha Lewis” restored skipjack; Mission - environmental, to preserve the bay and her heritage.   Spring, summer, fall - will take out school groups and charters. Need deckhands and docents.   Wonderful for students who enjoy being on the water.   Contact: 410-592-2170.
Irvine Natural Science Center: Natural Connections Project.   Help children learn about nature. Requires one or more mornings a week from June to August. Activities take place at Baltimore City Recreation Centers. Contact: 410-484-2413.

The Gay and Lesbian Community Center: Volunteers needed for a variety of tasks, Center will try to match student interests. Contact: 410-837-8888.

Support of the Homeless/Hungry
Heart Place Emergency Shelter Services:   A variety of opportunities available beginning in the fall.   Contact:   410-235-9269; located in St. John’s UM Church between St. Paul and Charles at 27 th St. basement door.
Homeless Coalition of Baltimore: Adopt-A-Family Program: Suitable for a class project.   Contact: 410-327-7057.
Garden Harvest, Inc.:   Garden Harvest is a non-profit organic farm that grows and donates fresh fruit and vegetables to the hungry.   Students can help in many ways including collecting newspapers to be used for weed control.   Farm activities are determined by the season and the weather at any given time.   For a list of seasonal activities and other information call: 410-526-0698 or www.gardenharvest.com
Paul’s Place Soup Kitchen: Provides meals for the homeless and hungry. Located at 1118 Ward Street in Baltimore. Contact: 410-625-0775.
Student Sharing Coalition*: P rovides service-learning opportunities for students throughout the Baltimore community. Ideally volunteer would be available one to two Saturdays or Sundays a month to help with service projects. For all other positions schedules would vary on the student's interests and availability. Maryland Food Bank: Volunteers sort canned goods, stock shelves and fill bags when needed.   241 N. Franklintown Road.   Contact: 410-947-0404.
Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity: Offers Baltimore area high school students a unique summer opportunity to build houses and make Baltimore a better place.   Students can enroll in Camp Habitat for a four day session, Tuesday-Friday from 8:30am to 4:00pm.   Contact: 410-234-9924 for camp dates and times.  
Hands On Baltimore/Serv-A-Thon:   A private non-profit organization that matches volunteers with community service projects to meet our communities’ critical needs.   Volunteers will paint classrooms, work on neighborhood beautification projects, refurbish recreation centers and low-income housing developments and clean up neighborhood playgrounds. Students Sharing Program: A joint effort of students throughout Maryland working to help homeless youth and families.   The Living Classrooms Foundation teams with Students Sharing for the Homeless in a community service project to provide empowerment, education, and cultural programs for the homeless.   Contact: 410-685-0295.
PLASE, Inc. - People Lacking Ample Shelter and Employment: Volunteers serve as clerical aides and receptionists, advocacy, counselors, assist with donation drives, and preparing meals for shelter clients. Contact: 410-486-1400 ext. 11.

Support of Hospitals/Rehabilitation Centers
Roland Park Place - Student volunteers needed in several areas. This project is of special interest to RPCS; Roland Park Place stands on the grounds there were formally our School. Contact: 410-243-6944.
Good Samaritan Hospital: Junior Volunteers Program: You must be at least 15 years old and available 3 days a week from 8:30 AM -2:00 PM. Contact: 410-532-3870 between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM Monday-Friday for an application.
Union Memorial Hospital - Junior Volunteer Program: You must be age 14 and above and a brief interview is necessary.   For information and application, contact Volunteer Manger at 410-554-2508.
Emerald Estates: An Assisted Living Community:   You must be at least 15 years old; many opportunities available.   Contact: 410-225-9337 or www.emeritus.com for more information.  
Candy Stripers: Contact the Volunteer Office of local hospitals.   You must be 15 year old to volunteer.
Levindale: Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital: You can widen your horizons, gain good practical experience, meet new friends and have a unique and challenging summer vacation.   If you are between the ages of 14 and 18 and would like to volunteer, contact 410-466-8700 ext. 260.
Mercy Medical Center Junior Volunteers: A six week summer program.   Contact: 410-234-2576.  
Sinai Hospital: Do you like children?   Do you need a great volunteer opportunity? For information, call The Sinai Auxiliary Office at 410-601-5033.
St. Agnes HealthCare Volunteer Services:   Purpose of this volunteer program is to acquaint high school students, 14-18 with the profession of nursing, medicine, and related health careers.   Volunteers are obliged to purchase a uniform shirt from their department (cost is $20.00).   Contact: 410-368-2816.

Support of Art and Museums
American Visionary Art Museum: Volunteers need to serve as greeters, to staff the museum store, to make crafts to sell in the store, to assist in the office, etc.   Contact: 410-244-1900.
Community Art Center of Towson University: Summer Art Camp Aides needed; will receive 75 hours of community service.   Three 2-week camp sessions: You will be asked to work in one of the 2-week sessions.   Volunteers must be over 15 years old.   Contact:   Bonnie Reynolds at 410-830-2351.
Pumpkin Theater at Brown Memorial Woodbrook Presbyterian Church:   Volunteers needed in their Summer Theater Camp or clerical help.   Contact:   410-323-9402 for more information.

Community Mediation Program:   Looking for volunteers to help them recruit teens into their program.   Contact: Brandon Cabell at 410-467-9165.  
House of Ruth - Shelter for battered women, legal counseling and counseling for abusers.   Urgently needs volunteer assistance all summer.   Contact: Gwen Travis or Jennifer Stump at 410-554-8450.
INNterim Housing Corp:   Provides temporary communal housing for women who have become single moms and their children.   Program focuses on empowerment through education and training.   Location: 112 Sudbrook Lane.   Contact: 410-363-0070 for information about specific opportunities.
