Middle School

At the Middle School level, the program emphasis continues to be on a strong academic curriculum with special attention given to the students' personal and social development. Inviting students to question and explore new ideas, teachers in the newly named Smith Middle School work closely with their students, fostering initiative, independence and creative thinking in the classroom.

The Middle School curriculum balances the teaching of content with teaching students how to learn, how to communicate effectively, how to get along with others, how to research, how to explore, and how to think logically and creatively. Classes provide forums in which girls are given the opportunity to discuss and debate world issues and current events, to become scientifically and mathematically literate and to apply scientific and mathematical concepts to real life situations. Middle School students are also encouraged to develop strong writing and interpretive skills and a global perspective through the study of foreign languages and cultures.

A selection of academic activities offered in the RPCS Middle School this past year include:

  • Studying the mathematical concepts in Islamic art

  • Learning hands-on about the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay

  • A three-day immersion into issues of immigration

  • A Holocaust Day of Remembrance (with the Upper School)

  • Trips to the American Visionary Art Museum, the Columbus Center and the Maryland Science Center

  • An outdoor education program offered at every grade level

If you have specific questions about the Middle School experience, please feel free to contact the Head of the Middle School.

Recognizing that the needs of the emerging adolescent are
unique, RPCS very effectively meets these needs through both the structure and variety of the Middle School program.
