Middle School
SUGGESTED SUMMER READING Grades 7 and 8

READ LIST OF BOOKS HERE

Dear Incoming Seventh and Eighth Graders:

Summer reading lists are not usually greeted with enthusiasm, and what a shame! Even if you are not a “bookworm,” there is nothing more inviting than to curl up with a good book on a hot sunny (or rainy) afternoon – whether at home or away—and laugh, cry, or experience exciting adventures with imaginary characters.

There is reading for all levels and all interests included on your summer reading list. Browse through the racks of the library with your list in hand, or if you are one who loves to keep filling your bookshelves with your own copies of great literature, head to a local beloved bookstore. The required summer reading books are available for ordering through Varsity.com, and Mrs. Kathie Krieger has alerted all local bookstores so that they should have copies in stock as well.

For seventh grade, you are asked to read five (5) books total during the summer, one from the list of required history readings, two required English books and three more of your choice from the attached overall list. Your two required English books are:

  1. Under the Persimmon Tree by Suzanne Fisher Staples
  2. The Misfits by James Howe

You should read carefully and take good notes on each required novel, as you will be tested on them during the first weeks of school. You should also prepare twenty-five (25) vocabulary words from any of your readings, on index cards, with the definition of the word and the sentence from the novel. Finally, please prepare one project on any book you desire. This project can be artwork, a poster, a small model or a brochure. It should showcase your analytical understanding of the book you are reporting on.

For eighth grade, you are asked to read six (6) books total during the summer. Your two required English books are:

  1. Under the Persimmon Tree by Suzanne Fisher Staples
  2. True Believer by Virginia Euwer Wolff

Please read these carefully, as they will be the basis for your initial assignments and evaluation in the fall. Taking notes on details is highly suggested! You are asked to complete two projects on your reading:

Project One: Take six characters, one each from your six different books, and do a project analyzing each one. You might do a characterization map or build or collect a token that represents the character, being sure to explain it in writing.

Project Two: Discuss the setting of one of the novels. Use a travelogue, a map, a poster, a short research paper, or any other artwork or idea from your imagination.

Keep in mind that these assignments will be your teachers’ first impression of your writing and creativity. Please be sure to put time and care into your work, especially when it comes to revising and editing. We will be eager to see what you have read and created!

Happy Reading!!!!
