Program Overview
“The physical development of our students along with the fostering of their cooperative, resilient spirit are hallmarks of the RPCS philosophy. Physical education and athletics are integral to our program and help us create leaders.” —Head of School
There are opportunities for students of every age and ability to take part in RPCS's extensive athletics program.
With a history of championship play and an ethic of sportsmanship and lifetime
fitness, RPCS athletics combine a competitive tradition and an inclusive
philosophy. The RPCS athletic program provides opportunities to compete at two levels—varsity, junior varsity, — in the Upper School and at A, B,
6th grade squad levels in the Middle School. Each level seeks to promote confidence, cooperation, and competition while improving team and individual skills. There is also an emphasis placed on the importance of sportsmanship and healthy competition. RPCS Athletics prepares all of its athletes for competition at the next level. The goal is to have every student competing at her level of development. The RPCS athletic program is voluntary. Practices are held after school and, in most cases, at the school. All levels, except Varsity provide equal opportunity for practice and play in games as long as students meet team requirements.
Varsity teams are for students who have advanced athletic maturity and skill level. The Varsity team competes at an advanced interscholastic level while preparing athletes for competition at the collegiate level. The Junior Varsity team focuses on developing skills and improving overall ability so that the players may move on to the Varsity team. More complex team concepts are introduced.
Varsity and Junior Varsity commitments are at least five days a week for at
least two hours a day.

The emphasis of Middle School teams is on individual skill development, team concepts, and sportsmanship.
The A Team is for Middle School students who display advanced athletic maturity and skill level and competes at an advanced level of competition. The B Team focuses on basic skill development and knowledge and understanding of the sport. The
6th grade emphasizes teamwork and participation while introducing basic team concepts and fundamental skills. All Middle School teams commit to at least one hour, four days a week.
